Se estima que un 85% de los residuos en el fondo marino corresponden a Artes y Aparejos de Pesca, convirtiéndose en la principal fuente de contaminación en los océanos. Dada la extensa costa de Chile y la relevancia del sector pesquero, el manejo sostenible de los Artes y Aparejos de Pesca al final de su vida útil se ha tornado fundamental en torno a la conservación de la biodiversidad marina y sus costas.

En el marco de la Ley 20.920 y el instrumento de la Responsabilidad Extendida del Productor, el Ministerio del Medio Ambiente está evaluando la incorporación de los residuos de Artes y Aparejos de Pesca como producto prioritario, pudiendo hacer establecer metas de recolección y manejo adecuado de estos residuos al final de su vida útil.

Luego de dar una introducción al instrumento REP en Chile, el webinar se enfocará en dar a conocer la experiencia europea, desde un punto tanto legislativo como práctico, de cómo se lleva a cabo el instrumento REP en torno a residuos marinos, con experiencias en torno a esta temática en distintos países de Europa. Se presentará además el primer estudio realizado en Chile que busca entregar una primera caracterización y magnitud del problema a nivel nacional, así como recomendaciones para su incorporación como producto prioritario en el marco de la REP.

It is estimated that 85% of the waste on the seabed corresponds to fishing gear, making it the main source of pollution in the oceans. Given Chile’s extensive coastline and the importance of the fishing sector, the sustainable management of fishing gear at the end of its useful life has become fundamental for the conservation of marine biodiversity and its coasts.

Within the framework of Law 20.920 and the Extended Producer Responsibility instrument, the Ministry of the Environment is evaluating the incorporation of fishing gear waste as a priority product, being able to establish goals for the collection and proper management of this waste at the end of its useful life.

After giving an introduction to the REP instrument in Chile, the webinar will focus on the European experience, both from a legislative and practical point of view, on how the REP instrument is carried out in relation to marine waste, with experiences in this area in different European countries. The first study carried out in Chile will also be presented, which seeks to provide a first characterization and magnitude of the problem at a national level, as well as recommendations for its incorporation as a priority product in the EPR framework.
