Protection of workers in their workplaces – EPRD study

Every day, workers from various industries are exposed to chemicals and mutagens in their workplaces. Cancer and other work-related health problems caused by exposure to carcinogenic and other hazardous chemical substances lead to the suffering of workers and their caring families. It reduces the length, quality, and productivity of the working lives of European workers.

Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for over 200 million workers in the EU is a strategic goal for the European Commission. One of the main challenges regarding Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is to improve the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to chemical agents.

It is important to ensure that risks to workers’ health that arise from exposure to carcinogenic and other hazardous chemicals at the workplace are effectively controlled including, where appropriate, by the use of limit values.

We are starting the fifth part of the study to collect the recent information for three groups of substances: asbestos, lead and its compounds and diisocyanates with the view to analyse the health, socio-economic and environmental impacts. Based on available data on exposure trends five different scenarios regarding possible amendments of Directive 98/24/EC (Chemical Agents) and Directive 2009/148/EC (Asbestos) will be elaborated.
