Project description:

For the period 2007-2013, the European Commission will launch a regional programme to (co)-fund initiatives in the field of environment in the five Central Asian Countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan). The provision of external technical expertise will support the European Commission in its identification phase and in designing a relevant, effective and sustainable regional environment programme. Under the “regional Strategy Paper for Assistance to Central Asia (2007-2012)” and “Central Asia Indicative Programme (2007-2010)”, the greatest challenge to be faced in Central Asia is the management of regional water resources between competing demands for human consumption, irrigation, industrial use and the generation of electricity. Deforestation is also a core environmental problem in Central Asia. Experience has demonstrated that these environment issues must be addressed not only through national programmes, but also by regional actions.
