Beneficiary:

Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), the National Meteorological Agency (NMA), Central Statistical Agency (CSA)

Project description:

Ethiopia remains one of the poorest and most vulnerable countries in the world. In 2005 Ethiopia ranked among the bottom ten countries on the UNDP’s Human Development Index. Agriculture is the main sector of the Ethiopian economy. It accounts for about 45 percent of the gross domestic product, provides employment for 80 percent of the population and generates about 90 percent of the export earnings. This means that any accurate analyses of the different elements that influence food security need to be based on reliable indicators from the agricultural sector. The Project is a contribution to the overall efforts to improve the food security situation of the country. With a total cost of 2.1 million euro, the project aimed at addressing a number of bottlenecks in the systems of information generation and analysis and related decision-making processes with respect to food security. The goal of the project is to establish and strengthen information systems for food security in order to improve the quality of food security and relief interventions. The immediate objectives of the project are: to improve the quality of food security-related data management through advanced technology and increase analytical capacity, to share food security information in a more comprehensive, systematic and regular manner among concerned stakeholders, and to better understand emerging and critical food security issues through selected studies.
